The upgraded 5 1/2″ plunger mechanism has been launched into production.

The Steklosphere plant has launched the production of a moderated plunger mechanism 5 1/2″ MPL-401-002.

The plunger mechanism in a sectional glass forming machine (for example, IS or AIS models) performs two main functions, depending on the selected glass container manufacturing process.:

1. Forming of roughing pellets (Parison)

In the process of “Press-and-Blow”: A plunger under pressure enters a heated drop of glass (gob) placed in a rough mold and completely compresses the inner cavity of the product, distributing the glass along the walls of the mold.
In the “Blow-and-Blow” process: The plunger makes a short upward movement to form an initial depression in the throat (“finish”), after which compressed air is supplied through it for pre-inflating.

2. Technological functions

Cooling: The plunger serves as a heat exchanger, removing excess heat from the inner surface of the glass to stabilize its viscosity before final blowing.
Glass distribution control: In modern machines (especially in the production of narrow-necked NNPB containers), the mechanism ensures a stroke accuracy of up to 0.02 mm, which significantly reduces the weight of the product while maintaining strength.
Air supply: Air can be supplied through the internal channels of the plunger to back-pressure or cool the tooling itself.

Advantages of the upgraded BDF mechanism:

High precision: the perfect alignment of the plunger and the shape eliminates defects in wall thickness.
Wear resistance: the components are made of heat-resistant alloys, resistant to cyclic loads.
Smooth running: the pneumatic drive ensures smooth operation.
Compatibility: fully adapted to the standards of BDF, Bottero, Emhart, and Heye machines in 5 1/2″ increments.
Technical specifications:
Machine type: Sectional (IS/AIS).
Center-to-center distance: 139.7 mm (5 1/2″).
Working medium: Heated glass (up to 1150°C).
Body material: High-strength cast iron / alloy steel.
